ODOT's Active Transportation Academy

Interested in requesting an instructor-led training or workshop?

You've come to the right place. For a full overview of the Active Transportation Academy and the resources and trainings offered, please visit ODOT's LTAP webpage and visit the Active Transportation Academy section.

There is no charge for ATA trainings or workshops. Trainings and workshops are selected based on funding and instructor availability. Communities who demonstrate a strong need for assistance and level of readiness to develop and implement plans, policy, or programs will be prioritized for workshops. Community data such as active transportation demand, equity considerations, and safety data are considered when prioritizing requests.

Who can apply?

The applicant ("host") must be a local jurisdiction (i.e. affiliated with a government agency, school district, health department, or regional planning organization). If a non-profit would like to apply, we request they partner with a local jurisdiction.

Instructor-Led Course Offerings

Community Workshops: Workshops are focused on providing technical assistance to a community to create a policy, plan, or program related to active transportation. Instruction and content is personalized for the community seeking the workshop. Applicants will serve as the ‘host’ agency and should ensure that a minimum of 8 key community stakeholders are in attendance (4 for Professional Development Rides). If selected, instructors will coordinate with ‘hosts’ ahead of the workshop to ensure personalized materials and content. In-person workshops require hosts to provide a room conducive to the training. Community Workshop offerings currently include:

  • Creating an Active Transportation Plan
  • Creating a Vision Zero Action Plan
  • Creating a School Travel Plan
  • Conducting Walk and Bike Audits
  • Professional Development Bike Rides

Trainings: Trainings educate attendees on topics of interest, educate individuals to teach the topic to other adults (train-the-trainer/TtT), or teach individuals to conduct a program in their community. Applicants should ensure that a minimum of 12 members are in attendance (40 for MDG). Trainings are well suited for multiple jurisdictions to attend together. In-person trainings require hosts to provide a room conducive to the training. Training options currently include:

  • Complete Streets Policy Development
  • Mobility Solutions: Transit's First and Last Mile
  • Walking School Bus Training (TtT)
  • Crossing Guard Trainings (TtT)
  • Girls in Gear Training
  • Multimodal Design Guide Training
